Treasurer Board Description 

Role

The Massachusetts Oyster Project is looking for a treasurer to fill its open board position.  

Mission 

The Massachusetts Oyster Project, Inc. is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit dedicated to improving water  quality, marine habitat, coastal resilience, and biodiversity through the reintroduction of oysters  into Massachusetts waters. For more information, please visit our website at  www.massoyster.org 

Board Role Description  

The treasurer is responsible for the financial management of the organization. The treasurer  works closely with the Board of Directors and Executive Director to ensure effective financial  planning, monitoring, and reporting. While Mass Oyster plans on growing, the current budget is  around $100k. In particular, responsibilities include accurate and timely record keeping in  Quickbooks Online. The treasurer is responsible for coordinating with outside accountants to  ensure timely filing of annual tax returns and audited financial statements (if applicable).  

Specific Board Responsibilities Include: 

  • Oversee the accurate and timely recording of all financial transactions and maintain  appropriate documentation in Quickbooks online 

  • Prepare regular financial reports for the Board, statement of activities; statement of  financial position 

  • In collaboration with the Executive Director, present financial reports and updates at  Board meetings and provide explanations of financial performance 

  • Works with the Executive Director to ensure funds received from grantors are spent in  accordance with the grant agreement 

  • Partners with the Board of Directors and Executive Director to develop the annual  budget and forecasting  

  • Ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards, legal requirements, and  regulations 

  • Coordinate and liaise with tax accountant and external auditors for annual audits or  financial reviews (if applicable) 

Fundraising

MOP Board Members will consider MOP a philanthropic priority and make annual gifts that  reflect that priority. So that MOP can credibly solicit contributions from foundations,  organizations, and individuals, MOP expects to have 100 percent of Board Members make an  annual contribution that is commensurate with their capacity. 

Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications

  • Strong financial acumen and knowledge of accounting principles and practices. ● Experience in financial management, budgeting, and reporting. 

  • Familiarity with non-profit financial operations and compliance requirements. ● Proficiency in Quickbooks Online accounting software 

  • A commitment to and understanding of MOP’s mission 

  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a passion for improving the relationships of  MOP’s partners OR Ethical and transparent approach to financial management. 

Board terms/participation 

MOP’s Board Members will serve a two-year term to be eligible for re-appointment for additional  terms. Board meetings will be held 6 times per year and committee meetings will be held in  coordination with full board Meetings. 

Service on MOP’s Board of Directors is without remuneration, except for administrative support,  travel, and accommodation costs in relation to Board Members’ duties.
