Our Gloucester upweller is our flagship upweller, launched in 2017. We partnered with Maritime Gloucester to build the upweller on their newly renovated main pier downtown. The primary purpose of the project is to collect water quality data from water entering and exiting the upweller. That helps measure the oysters’ impact on local water pollution. We also run educational tours of the upweller all season long for visitors and student groups.
Since its opening, it’s become a local landmark. It also nurtured almost 360,000 oysters as of 2023, which have been released at sites around the North Shore.
Current state regulations prohibit the release of oysters in restricted waters. Prior to release, we work with the Division of Marine Fisheries and the town's shellfish warden or constable to select appropriate release sites.
